The Bechdels hired me for my first summer season with Canyons in 1999. Without a doubt, it was one of the best life and employment decisions I have ever made. Today, I believe the level of camaraderie, connection, and passion people share with every Canyons River Company experience remains peerless in the industry, as it has since my first day on the river with Les, Whiz, Greg, Tim, and the whole crew. Throughout my life’s experiences: sailing, surfing, boating, climbing, international adventuring, graduate “schooling”, career and family making, Canyons has never left my heart…the call of the river still rings loud and clear in my soul. I am honored and feel absolutely supercharged with anticipation each year Greg invites me to return to guide with the Canyons family as an “alum.” I currently live and work as a high school science teacher in our idyllic beach community of Ventura, CA, where, for the better part of the past decade, my wife, Shawn, and I have shared the love, joy, and glorious challenge of raising our “caring, amazing, and energetic” daughter, River (all quoted words spelled, proofread, and approved by River, age 8 going on 15).
