Wilderness First Responder by Sierra Rescue

12-Day Middle Fork & Main Salmon River Trip

June 1-12

Canyons teams up with Sierra Rescue to offer our first ever Wilderness First Responder course on the Salmon River. Enjoy the beautiful wilderness, exciting whitewater and natural hot springs of Idaho, while acquiring Wilderness First Responder skills. The trip launches on June 1, 2017 at Boundary Creek (or possibly at Indian Creek-see below for details on this), on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. The trip will take out at Carey Creek, on the Main Salmon on June 12. A typical day will include class time throughout the day with river travel in between. In the evening at camp, there will be additional class time. The length of the course and necessary river travel will result in little down time. This is an educational trip with the focus being on the WFR.

Canyons offers the opportunity to paddle raft, inflatable kayak, hard shell kayak, open boat, SUP or ride in an oar raft. Hard shell kayakers and open boaters must be comfortable in Class III-IV whitewater. Students are welcome to bring their own small crafts or use Canyons’ (see our BOAT CHOICES). Canyons guides will prepare meals, offer interpretive information and provide on and off water safety.

80 hour WFR course

Taught by Sierra Rescue, this intensive Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is designed with the outdoor professional and outdoor enthusiast in mind. A WFR certification has become the industry standard for most guide services and environmental education programs. The course focuses on developing skills for treating problems outside of the “golden hour” of first response, and improvising under extreme conditions. Based on the protocols set by the Wilderness Medical Society, our instruction encourages students to think through the body systems in an effort to determine the best response to traumatic, environmental or medical situations.

Instruction includes outdoor classroom sessions followed by hands on practicals, to integrate the information into a field setting. 100% attendance is required. At least one night scenario will be performed. Students will be given a comprehensive written exam at the end of the course. OSHA approved AEHS adult, infant and child CPR certification is included. Mandatory pre-course work will be administered 1 month prior to the trip. For more information about the WFR click here: Sierra Rescue

Things Included:

Wilderness First Responder and CPR course, waterproof dry bags, tents, ground sleeping pads, wetsuits, type V rafting PFDs and helmets for rafters/inflatable kayakers, camp chairs, souvenir water bottles, all meals and beverages, use of our hardshell kayaks or whitewater canoes-for those with the appropriate skill level and experience.

Things NOT Included:

$4/day Recreation Enhancement Act Fee ($48 total for 12 day trip), sleeping BAG rental (optional, and available for $35+tax), personal paddling gear for hard shell kayakers and canoeists, guide gratuity, backcountry flights (optional, except when water levels or conditions require us to launch our Middle Fork trips at Indian Creek, which will require a backcountry flight, for an additional fee….*see below for more detail).

Getting to and from the river

There are “FLIGHT OPTIONS” and “DRIVE OPTIONS”. Check out our Transportation Options.

*Due to the early June launch date, there is the possibility that the water will be too high to launch from Boundary Creek. Also, a heavy snow pack could result in the closure of Boundary Creek road. Given either of these situations, it will be necessary for the trip to start 25 miles downstream from Boundary Creek, at Indian Creek. This will require a back country flight into Indian Creek, for an addition fee (please call 208.634.4303 for specifics).
